The US government accuses Apple of overstating it's market prices
The US government has filed a landmark lawsuit against the tech giant apple for maintaining a monopoly in the smartphone market now the justice department accuses the company of squashing the growth of new apps and reducing the appeal of rival products
more than a billion of people around the
world own an i phone. for many people it's almost unthinkable that they would use any other suit."for me apple works a little bit better than android i have had An android before." Stated by an interviewee on BBC
"it's just want my parents always god man is just like easy to stick with that." Said the second source interviewed on BBC
"the rest of my family also has i phone and so it's they're just very compatible." Said the third source on the BBC YouTube platform
All of which makes it one of the most successful companies last year sales of just the i phone made it more than one hundred and fifty billion pounds in revenues profit.
US department of justice along with sixteen different states has filed a lawsuit against apple. The US attorney general Merrick Garland said "as our complaint alleges apple has maintained monopoly power in the smartphone market not simply by staying ahead of the competition on the merits but by violating federal antitrust law.
apple denies the accusations saying in a statement this lawsuit threatens who and against it. Apple Statement reads "The lawsuit thereaths who we are and the principles that set apple products apart... If successful, it would hinder our ability to create the type of technology people expect from Apple... We believe this lawsuit is wrong on the facts and the law, and we will vigorously defend against it."
"one hundred countries that is in large part due to the success of the i phone apple's signature smartphone product.
For over a decade i phone sales have made up a majority of apple's annual revenue today apple share of the US performance smartphone market exceeds seventy percent and it's share of the entire US smartphone market exceeds sixty five percent.
Apple charges as much as nearly sixteen hundred dollars for an iphone,
but as our complaint alleges apple has maintained monopoly power in the smartphone market not simply by staying ahead of the competition on the merits but by violating federal antitrust law.
Consumers should not have to pay higher prices because companies break the law
we alleged that apple has employed a strategy that relies on exclusionary anti competitive conduct that hurts both consumers and developers. For consumers that is meant fewer choices higher prices in fees lower quality smartphones apps and accessories and less innovation from
apple and it's competitors.
For developers that as meant being forced to play by rules that insulate apple from competition and as outlined in our complaint we alleged that apple has consolidated it's monopoly power... not by making its own products better but by making other products worse. Apple carries out it's exclusionary anti-competitive conduct in to principal ways: first apple, imposes contractual restrictions and fees that limit the features and functionality that developer can offer i phone users.
Second, apple selectively restrict access to the points of connection between third party apps and the IPhone's operating system
degrading the functionality of non apple apps and accessories. As a result for most of the past fifteen years apple has collected attacks and the form of a thirty percent commission on the price of any app downloaded from the app store as well as on in app purchases.
Apple is able to command these fees from companies of all sizes, apple has also suppress the emergence of programs like cloud streaming apps including gaming apps as well as super apps that could reduce user dependence on apple's own operating system and expensive hardware and it as any i phone user who has ever seen a green text message or received a tie.
Any grainy video can attest apple's anti competitive conduct also includes making it more difficult for iPhone users to message with users of done apple products. it does this by diminishing the functionality of it's own messaging app and by diminishing the functionality of a third party messaging apps. By doing so, apple knowingly and deliberately degrades quality privacy and security for it's users. For example, if an iPhone user messages a non iPhone user and apple messages the text appears not only as a green bubble but incorporates limited functionality.
The conversation is not encrypted videos are pixelated and grainy and users cannot edit messages or see typing indicators as a result iPhone users perceive rival smartphones as being lower quality, because the experience of messaging friends and family who do not own i phones is worse, even though apple is the one responsible for breaking cross platform messaging and it does so intentionally. For example, in 2013 a senior executive at apple explained that "supporting cross platform messaging an apple messages quote would simply serve to remove an obstacle to iPhone families giving their kids android phones" and twenty twenty two apple CEO was asked whether apple would fix iPhone to android messaging. He said "not to make it personal but i can't send my mom certain videos."
Apple's CEO responded by saying"buy you mom an i phone." in addition to selectively controlling app distribution and creation we allege that apple is violating the law by conditionally restricting developers access to the interface which is needed to make an app functional on the apple operating system
for a product like a smart watch or digital wallet to be useful to an i phone user it must be able to communicate with the IPhone's operating system. But apple create barriers and make it extremely difficult and expensive for both users and developers to venture outside the apple ecosystem.
