U.S MOVEMENT IN EVERY DECADE

1) 1920- National woman's party suffragette movement
Started with Susan B. Antony in 1800s. In the 20th century it changed America because the national women's party were hungry for equality and fought for their rights. They spent decades organising suffrage demonstrations, meetings, and petitions. And even hunger strikes. Movement cumulated in 1920 with ratification of the 19th amendment that November, women were able to cast ballots. Each person that casted they vote got the 'i voted sticker.'

2) 1930s - unemployment protest
The great depression resulted in 25% of unemployment leading to hunger on families. Between 1930-32. The unemployment council's group organised over 700 unemployment protests sponsored by the communist party in USA. major cities protests were paid of in 1935 when the social security act published a system of benefits to protests and support American workers.

3) 1940s Sun- bowl protests
1948 students at layette college in Pennsylvania protested racist practices in college football. David schall- military hero and former taskegee airmen star player. Sun bowl didn't want him to play and he fought. College's leadership refused their invitation to play. The students rallied support. Sent telegram to Harry. S. Truman and went to radio stations. By 1950s colleges refused racist football. 

4) 1950s - Montgomery Bus boycotts
One woman act of protest turned into a mega movement when Rosa parks refused to give up a seat on a bus to a white man in 1955. The protest began four days later. Over 40000 black bus riders refused to ride in protest of segregation. An initial one-day boycott led to the formation of Montgomery improvement association with Martin Luther king leading.

5) 1960s- Moratorium to end war in Vietnam
On October 15th and November 15, two Marches took place known to end war in Vietnam. 2.5 million people participated. This movement became the largest anti-war movement in History. 

6) 1970s student strike of 1970
President Nixon announced that the U.S will attack Cambodia in 1970, the students threw a book at him. The movement began in Princeton university called for a nationwide student strike of colleges and universities. The whole semester was closed.

7) Anti-nuclear Disarnment
1 million people gathered in New-York city to support Disarnment and demand the removal of nuclear weapons from military arsenals.

8) 1990s million man march

Took place in Washington D.C, October 16, 1995. The aim of the march was to uplift themselves, families, and communities. There was speeches from Rosa Parks, Maya Angelou and Jesse Jackson senior. 12 million men registered to vote and there was an increase in adoption of black children

9) March for womens march.
Started In march of 2004. It mobilized to fight back against conservative policies of George. W. Bush. The women wanted safe and legal abortions, comprehensive health care, STI prevention, and contraception. Gloria Steinem - feminist leader spoke at the monument event stating "we are here to take back our country"

10) 2010s - march for our lives

Mass shootings took place. Tragic shooting at parkland Florida's Douglas highschool in 2018 was led by parkland students who survived the shooting. Leading to 880 marches taking place across U.S. Tokyo, Roma, and Paris also participated in the march.

11) 2020s - Black lives matter 
Black lives matter started in 2013 and it moved to greater heights in May 2020 when millions of people took to the streets to protest the killing of George Floyd at hands of police in Minneapolis Minnesota. Despite COVID-19, massive crowds came out and demanded an end to police brutality. Marches taking place in over 2000 cities and 60 countries across the globe. The stats indicate that across the globe. Stats indicate that over 25 million Americans participated. This is the largest movement in U.S history.
